Stores Pull Jalapeno Peppers From Shelves

Smith's, Albertsons Follow FDA Salmonella Warning

Your favorite pepper may be harder to find.

Two major grocery chains are pulling jalapenos off store shelves.

As a part of a voluntary recall, Smith's and Albertsons are pulling all fresh jalapeno peppers and anything made with them off the shelves in New Mexico and across the country.

This follows Monday's announcement by the Food and Drug Administration that a jalapeno pepper had tested positive for the same strain of salmonella that has sickened more than 1,200 people across the country.

That jalapeno pepper was grown in Mexico and came from a distribution center in McAllen, Texas, called Agricola Zaragoza.

The center is voluntarily recalling jalapeno peppers distributed since June 30, and Smith's and Albertsons are following that recall.

Other stores, like the La Montanita Co-op, are keeping the jalapenos on the shelf.

They get their peppers from California and don't use the distribution center in question.

"In the next two or three weeks, local New Mexico jalapenos are going to be out. We pick those directly from the farmer, so we have no doubts in the quality," Mark Lane of La Montanita Co-op said.

Wal-Mart is also still selling jalapeno peppers.

It said it also does not get its peppers from the distribution company in question.

Meanwhile, the FDA is still recommending people avoid eating raw jalapeno peppers until further notice.

It is still investigating the cause of the nationwide salmonella outbreak.
