Northeast Heights Bear Captured

A bear roaming though the foothills has been captured, but Game and Fish officials said that doesn't mean residents are in the clear.

For two weeks, a 100-pound male bear roamed the Sandia Heights neighborhood. On Thursday night, he was on his way to a new home.

The bear was spotted Monday night on Father Sky Court, not far from Menaul and Tramway. Albuquerque police joined Game and Fish on a hunt for the animal, which quickly became the talk of that part of town.

Authorities finally caught up with him Thursday morning and managed to tranquilize the bear. They said he's probably not the only bear that section of the city will see this summer and that properly storing garbage plays a major role.

To keep bears away from your home and family, be sure to keep your garbage cans closed and inside your garage. Also, don't put the trash out on the curb the night before it's supposed to be picked up. Keeping pet food inside will help, and try not to over-stuff bird feeders.

The bear was taken to the mountains west of Albuquerque, where he'll be released.
