A September trial date is set for Sarah and Matthew Hepple, two parents accused of abusing their children.Thursday during a hearing, prosecutors asked the judge not to force the children to testify.Prosecutors argue the two children in this case are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
The state said it would be too traumatic for the children to testify. The defense argued the Hepples deserve a fair trial and that meant hearing from the children who made the accusations. The attorneys claimed the Sixth Amendment gives them the right to a fair trial. The state said it worried about the children, saying the children fear being in the same room with their parents.Judge John Pope agreed with the defense, and the kids will testify. The case began last July when two of their kids went to police saying their parents had chained them to chairs for days, allowed them to shower only once a week or less, and were tortured inside their Meadowlake home. The trial is set to begin in early September. If both are found guilty on the 10 counts of child abuse they face, they both could spend more than 100 years in prison.
