Newly Formed Committee Monitoring Complaints Against APD

APD Internal Affairs Reveals Its Records

City Councilors Ask For Full Report

While it's not the most visible side of the police department, the internal affairs department is constantly at work.

Albuquerque's city councilors wanted to know exactly what the Albuquerque police have been investigating within the department during a session Monday night.

Each day APD investigates claims from "Subject was front kicked in the chest by officer," "Officer struck offender in the head," "Officer made inappropriate comments regarding race."

These are claims Police Chief Ray Schultz said he takes seriously.

"We realize we have people working for us and we are not always perfect, but we do want to learn from our mistakes. We don't cover anything up. It is what it is and we'll address the problem as it comes to our attention," said Schultz.

A newly formed city council public safety committee will now receive updates from Schultz on the progress of each complaint.

"Every department has a standard operating procedure and if you don't follow that, somebody has the right to write you up," Albuquerque City Councilor Sally Mayer said.

According to recent statistics, more than 80 percent of internal investigation claims filed by a fellow officer turn out to be true. This is a percentage chief Shultz is happy with.

"What that is telling me is that my supervisors are recognizing wrong behavior and addressing it through discipline and corrective action," Schultz said.

APD said they investigate two types of complaints; those generated by the public and those generated by other officers.

The ones that come from outside the department are found to be true about 23 percent of the time.

The first night of the public safety committee was Monday.

Before Schultz said he would report to the finance and land and zoning committees on the status of his department.
