Las Vegas, N.M. -- Las Vegas School District Superintendent Rick Romero said Tuesday the six students who allegedly sexually assaulted their Robertson High School football teammates with a broomstick will have their individual closed hearings next Tuesday. The school principal has recommended expulsion for each of the six alleged perpetrators.Romero said a final decision will be made based on the hearings whether or not the students will be able to return to the school.
"I will ultimately support or make recommendations on that as the final administrator in this capacity, and then based on that decision, the parents have the right to appeal that decision to the board of education," said Romero. The school district is also looking into claims that other students may have been victimized or participated in the hazing. The district has also implemented some changes, including creating a district-wide health and wellness advisory committee. The district will also revisit board policies and provide workshops for children entitled Good Touch Bad Touch."I hope what comes out of this is a community with a heightened sense of awareness that says, 'it must stop,'" said Romero. The school district is hoping to wrap up its investigation into the football staff and coaching director by the end of this week or early next week. Those school employees are on paid administrative leave. The state police criminal investigation is still ongoing.
