ABC News Correspondent Sam Donaldson is weighing in on the race for the Democratic presidential nominee.Donaldson, a New Mexico resident, spoke exclusively with Action 7 News to provide his predictions for the Democratic Party.Although Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign plans to use her win in West Virginia to push her argument that she can win over voters in key states, Donaldson said with Sen. Barack Obama's commanding lead, it could be too late.
"It doesn't matter from the standpoint of the Democratic nomination," Donaldson said. "She needs to win every contest between now and the end, June 3, by about 80 percent in each one in order to catch up with him on pledged delegates and it's just not going to happen."Donaldson said another problem for Clinton is her dwindling number of superdelegates."Superdelegates each day are moving to Sen. Obama. At the end of the race if he isn't really over the top, superdelegates will move to him," Donaldson said.Donaldson said with only three weeks left in the primaries, he believes Clinton will stay in the race. But after that, he believes she will bow out and present a unified front at the Democratic National Convention this August."Whether Sen. Clinton is on the ticket or not, I believe when she withdraws from the race -- I assume that's going to be in early June -- she'll do so gracefully and she'll pledge her full support for Sen. Obama and urge her supporters to back Obama," Donaldson said.As far as the rumors of a "dream team ticket," with Clinton as Obama's running mate, Donaldson said, "He is a good politician. They will do what they need to do, and he'll put her on the ticket if his calculation is that she will help."Donaldson said this long battle between the Democratic rivals has not hurt the Democratic Party. In fact, he said, it's been just the opposite."The party chairman is correct. The party has registered millions of new voters whose interest comes clearly from the contest," Donaldson said.
