Newsroom Internships

Who Is Eligible?

Internships in the KOAT newsroom are restricted to college students currently enrolled in a journalism course that gives credit hours for an internship. Only one or two interns are selected each semester; upperclassmen are given priority.

What Does A Newsroom Intern Do?

Interns help on the Assignment Desk by answering phones making beat checks, and setting up stories, they accompany reporters and photographers in the field, observe activities in the newsroom, and help with other projects as needed. Most universities require that interns work 45 hours for every credit hour they wish to earn. To earn 3 credits in a standard 16-week term, be prepared to work 8.5 hours per week. Summer semester terms vary in length, and consequently the number of hours interns work each week during the summer varies. The specific schedule is set up after the intern is accepted. We always try to accommodate class and work schedules to find times mutually convenient for both the newsroom and the student. Internships are unpaid.

How and When to Apply:

The deadline for Fall Semester Internships is the first Friday in August; for the Spring semester it is the first Friday in December, and for the summer semester it is the first Friday in May.

Submit four things:

a) A letter indicating your interest that explains why you want to be an intern and lists what kinds of journalism classes/experiences you have had thus far b) A resume of your job history c) A list of three or four job references.
