ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A five-month investigation into an Albuquerque business has turned into the largest CD pirating raid in New Mexico history, the state Attorney General’s Office said.

Authorities swarmed Krazy Kat music in the 8000 block of Central Avenue Tuesday, seeking CDs they suspected had been illegally copied and sold for a fraction of the retail price.

"I have an idea of where these discs are located. So we're going to go in and retrieve anything that we feel is necessary to substantiate our case," said special agent Ed Griego.

“If you’re doing something wrong, you have to pay the price,” said longtime customer Tracy Almond. He had come to the store to trade a DVD, something he said he’d been doing there for 10 years.

Customers were allowed to leave the store during the raid because buying a pirated CD is not against the law, police said.

Krazy Kat owner Ed Stange had no comment for Target 7’s Mitch Blacher, but agents said he did talk to them.

“He seemed to be fairly calm,” said Griego. “He was surprised, I think, but he wasn’t hostile or angry or upset or anything.”

The Attorney General’s Office did not arrest or charge anybody in Tuesday’s raid. Agents said they are building a case and may file charges once they sift through the items they seized.

Pirating music and selling it is a fourth-degree felony in New Mexico.
